Georgia Cyber Academy is hiring Special Education Teachers for the 21-22SY!

***This is a REMOTE position***

GCA's Special Education Teacher is a certified educator who provides daily instruction and support in the virtual academic environment. The special education teacher creates strategies to engage and facilitate student learning, serves as a case manager and point of contact for students and parents, and monitors academic progress to help prioritize student learning objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate, develop, and facilitate IEP and eligibility consideration meetings
  • Collaborate with instructional teachers to review student academic data
  • Track and communicate all IEP service changes (e.g. setting, accommodations, eligibility changes, related services, AT needs, etc.)
  • Collaboratively serve as point of contact regarding academic needs, accommodations, and IEP services for families and teachers
  • Receive progress reports and information from related services providers
  • Provide special education documents to parent/guardian and required team members prior to and following meetings
  • Administer assessments (e.g. performance, informal, or formal) to monitor student progress
  • Monitor student engagement and attendance data
  • Input testing accommodations into school database after each IEP meeting; verify accommodations prior to state testing
  • In collaboration with school counselor, verify student class schedules for alignment with IEP services and FTE reporting
  • Document communication with families via contact logs in Infinite Campus
  • Maintains lesson plans, artifacts, and materials used to facilitate student instruction
  • Comply with all written policies and procedures in teacher, district, and school-based handbooks
  • Establish a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning
  • Implement all IEP services and accommodations within classroom and testing environments with fidelity
  • Utilize research-based strategies and differentiation to engage and nurture student learning and student relationships based on individual strengths and needs

Requirements

Elementary Special Education Teacher:

  • Minimum of SRT4 Certification in General Curriculum Special Education AND the Special Education Academic Content Areas (Math Science, Social Studies, Reading and English) P-5

4-8 Special Education Teacher

  • Minimum of SRT4 Certification in General Curriculum Special Education and one of the Special Education Academic Content Areas 4-8 (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and English) required;
  • Or, passed the GACE Program Admissions Assessment or have exemption eligibility (ACT/SAT scores) AND passed the GACE in General Curriculum Special Education and one of the Special Education Academic Content Areas 4-8

Middle School Special Education Teacher:

  • Minimum of SRT4 Certification in General Curriculum Special Education and one of the Special Education Academic Content Areas 4-8 or 6-12 (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and English) required;
  • Or, passed the GACE Program Admissions Assessment or have exemption eligibility (ACT/SAT scores) AND passed the GACE in General Curriculum Special Education and one of the Special Education Academic Content Areas 4-8 or 6-12

High School Special Education Teacher:

  • Minimum of SRT4 Certification in Special Education General Curriculum Consultative (P-12) and the (6-12) English, or Math, or Science, or Social Science core academic content; OR
  • Passed the GACE Program Admissions Assessment or have exemption eligibility (ACT/SAT scores) AND passed the GACE in Special Education General Curriculum Consultative (P-12) and have passed the core academic content test (6-12), AND GACE Educator Ethics Program Entry

Work Environment

  • This is a home-based position that may require traveling up to 25% of the time.
  • In-person attendance at professional development, training, conferences, job fairs, and testing sites will be required several times per year.
  • Light lifting required.

"Terrible Top Level Leadership"

At GCA, the Head of School has never been an educator. This sets up a LOT of horrible decision making. Teachers had absolutely ZERO say in any decisions that affect them and were ignored or openly shot down if they tried to voice opinions. The students are the same as anywhere else and its nice to work from home, but more and more is added onto teachers every day and every year with less and less respect from upper management (HoS and "Directors"). Some great people working there that are being beaten down by busy work, foolish decisions (that were not thought through), and back door school politics.

"Horrible place to work"

Every year this company piles on the work for teachers. There is not enough time to get everything done 8-5, you will be working after hours or on weekends to stay caught up. You will be micromanaged by a lot of different administrators and expected to write pages of lesson plans. I have taught at many schools and the lesson plan format GCA uses is the most extensive I’ve ever seen. It’s nice to work from home but not when you’re tied to the computer all day and on weekends. This online school is too much like a brick and mortar school, expect you are not paid according to your educational experience or advanced degree. I would not recommend teaching here at all and this will be my last year here. I hope the school board reads all of these reviews from teachers and makes positive changes to improve the school because it’s not just teachers suffering - students are also overwhelmed with the work load and are only given a few minutes between each class.

It used to be a great place to work, but the higher ups have changed the structure and it became impossible to work there. A very high turnover of staff and students.

I read all the review and did not think they could all be true. I learned the hard way that they are most definitely true. There are so many principals and upper level people. My head was spinning with all the top position holders compared to the teachers. The many platforms and learning criteria was overwhelming. They definitely micro-manage you. The appeal of working from home was quickly cut short with the reality of all I would be doing was working from home ALL day! So, my advice to anyone reading this, listen to the reviews!!
