We're looking for someone to join the Media Manipulation Monitor (M3) team as a Chinese Subject Matter Intern who is passionate about deciphering China’s infosphere for US-based clients in the public and private sectors. M3 uses bleeding edge data science tools to decode manipulation of Chinese social media, and we seek a Chinese-enabled researcher to help discern in fine detail the content of propaganda campaigns, netizen discussions, Chinese internet memes, and more. All of our internships are paid, and you will receive $25/hour for approximately 15 hours a week of work.

As a Chinese Subject Matter Intern at M3, you will be responsible for interpreting and analyzing Chinese-language social media content and work with a team of other China Subject Matter Experts to create analysis that explains what is happening and what it means. The issues you will work on feed into helping solve some of the most important foreign policy questions facing the US Government and Fortune 50 companies today.

There is room to grow in this position. Several of our former interns have gone on to full, salaried positions. M3’s team is passionate about all things China and is a great place for people who wish to further develop and apply their China expertise to real-world issues.

This position is fully remote, just like the rest of the M3 team. Our normal business hours tend to align with the East Coast, but we are flexible and we work with teammates and clients around the world.

In this position, you’ll:

  • Read dozens or hundreds of publicly-accessible Chinese social media posts every day and formulate analysis based on the content
  • Identify shifts in Chinese social media discourse among netizens or government-backed propaganda campaigns
  • Write reports ranging from time sensitive alerts to in-depth analyses
  • Assist the China team in communicating analysis to our customer base
  • Represent analytic excellence and consistently challenge our team’s assumptions

Here are some of the skills you’ll need to dive into the role:

  • Professional fluency in reading Mandarin Chinese
  • Deep and up-to-date knowledge of what is happening in China
  • Deep and up-to-date knowledge of China’s social media ecosystem and awareness of its online discourse, including recent trending topics, memes, and internet slang
  • Significant in-region experience
  • Proven experience writing clear and concise reports.
  • Well organized and efficient, great with deadlines.
  • Basic technical proficiency (e.g., adept in Microsoft Office, Google Docs suite).
  • You do not need to have data analytics or engineering experience for this job, but you should show interest and capacity to learn new skills as you will be working closely with technical teams.
