Position Description
Far Harbor helps to design and evaluate research initiatives that aim to improve maternal, child and reproductive health in the US and developing countries. We seek an experienced applied research scientist or statistician with excellent communication skills to contribute on multidisciplinary teams and consult with our clients.
The Research Scientist works with diverse team members on long-term statistical consulting projects in public health. This person assists fellow scientific staff, conducts analyses of population health surveys, oversees data preparation and quality checking, develops analytic plans, reviews research products, and participates in authoring of peer-reviewed journal publications.
Experience/Skills Required
- PhD in statistics, economics, psychology, sociology, or related social science strongly preferred
- At least 3-5 years of professional experience as an applied research statistician (or in a position with significant statistical duties)
- Graduate-level statistical training required (probability, sampling, general linear models)
- Proficiency with SAS and other statistical software (data step processing, developing and calling SAS macros, and running statistical procedures); SAS programming expertise strongly preferred
- Experience with multilevel analytic methods and/or weighted logistic regression
- Familiarity with complex survey designs (clustered sampling, oversampling)
- Experience with program evaluation and observational (or quasi-experimental) studies preferred
- Good understanding of analytic methods for non-random samples, non-equivalent groups, selection bias, etc.
- Some familiarity with psychometrics, measurement models, and/or structural equation modeling a plus
- Friendly communication skills with the ability to present clear results to non-technical audiences
- Excellent writing and demonstrated scientific publication experience
- Applied consulting experience or project management a plus
Compensation
$88k-118k/year salary (based on experience) with annual bonus potential. Vacation, holidays, 401k plan, flex work benefits and company-paid access to the on-site gym.

The firm offers expert research and analysis consulting to a number of federal, state, and international clients. We serve our clients primarily by assisting in the design and analysis of field research and population studies.
Work Location
This is a local position in our downtown Austin TX office; flex-hours and telework (Mon & Fri) are available with proficiency on projects. Our modern offices include a fitness center with showers for walking/running/biking to work. Occasional travel might be required (2-3 trips per year for client meetings). We follow CDC and city guidelines and implement policies for telework during pandemic spikes. We enjoy a collegial work environment and are motivated to provide excellent scientific work for our clients.
