The Climate Initiative (TCI) is a science-based education non-profit aimed at helping solve the climate crisis through our focus on educating, empowering, and activating youth. We believe that this generation of youth will shift politics, stimulate solutions, and ultimately be agents of change.

The Region 5 Intern should be passionate about finding solutions to address the climate crisis and its impacts nationwide and in their local community. The individual filling this internship will report directly to the TCI Central US Regional Coordinator and TCI will provide necessary training on the organization’s mission, strategy, and programs. The individual will represent TCI virtually and on the ground in the Chicago area and will be proficient in networking and effective communication. This is a remote position, with anticipated attendance at in-person events in the Chicago area if COVID-19 restrictions allow.

The IPCC notes, “Impacts of climate change are likely to be felt most acutely not only by the poor, but also by certain segments of the population, such as the elderly, the very young, the powerless, indigenous peoples, and recent immigrants, particularly if they are linguistically isolated”. TCI values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and our workforce should reflect the communities we are activating.

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Developing professional relationships with environmental nonprofit organizations in Chicago
  • Creating a written “landscape analysis” of nonprofit and community-based organizations in Illinois that are engaged in environmental work and climate action.
  • Increasing TCI youth ambassador membership in Chicago through coffee chats, virtual meetups, and other personal interactions
  • Hosting at least one TCI Community Conversation in collaboration with an Illinois-based non-profit organization and TCI youth ambassadors
  • Collaborating with TCI youth ambassadors to host at least one ambassador project in the Chicagoland area
  • Creating a blog post for TCI’s website
  • Creating regional content for Mobilize, TCI’s social media platform

Success metrics for this role:

  • Send direct communication to at least 20 organizations in your region and set up a zoom or in-person meeting with at least 5 organizations
  • Submit a written landscape analysis of at least 20 organizations by the end of the internship
  • Implement at least 1 in-person Community Conversation in your region in collaboration with a local organization
  • Meet on zoom or in-person with at least 10 youth
  • Implement at least 1 in-person ambassador project in the Chicagoland area
  • Create a total of 8 posts on Mobilize
  • Create 1 blog post

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer and must be able to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.

Educational Experience:

  • Current undergraduate student at a 2 or 4-year institution OR comparable life and work experience
