"Great flexibility, poor pay"
Current EmployeeSubstitute Teacher
I have been a substitute teacher for many years and have done several long term assignments. I work more than 35 hours per week in these assignments and pour my all into it. It is crazy that I'm making $13 an hour with no pay increase while some fast food restaurants are paying $15 an hour. DCPS has got to do better. Either don't contract out and save money to increase pay or pay these contractors (ESS) less. They get about $6/hour for every hour that we work.

"Flexible, fun job"
Former EmployeeSubstitute Teacher
I mostly loved working for ESS. I was able to have a flexible schedule which was awesome! The kids were wonderful and I loved my job. The only problems were that you have to compete for the better assignments . Many schools already have a preferred sub list. Until you get added to one of those, you will sometimes have to scramble for jobs. Also, the pay for long term assignments is inadequate. You do all the work of a regular teacher but are only $10 more per day more than the regular rate. It’s hardly worth it. Still, overall I loved my time with ESS.

"No hassel company to work for. Enjoy the school I work in, although you can work in any school you chose. n "
Current EmployeeSubstitute Teacher
Good company to work for, you chose when and where. I work in one school and I love it. One can chose any school they want. I appreciate the flexibility.

ESS does a great job getting substitutes in the classrooms via partnerships with the local school districts. They are in multiple states, and at least in my area, support their people well.
